Explore Italy’s hidden gems: 1€ houses now available in Sant’Elia a Pianisi

In some parts of Italy, there are towns and villages that are offering houses for sale for the symbolic price of 1 euro, the latest to do so is Sant’Elia a Pianisi. The initiative aims to revitalise the town’s economy and to attract new residents to help combat depopulation.

Sant’Elia a Pianisi is a small town located in the Molise region of southern Italy, 2,5 hours from Naples, with a population of just over 1,700 people. However, like many other towns offering 1€ houses, the properties for sale in Sant’Elia a Pianisi typically require significant renovation and restoration work. The commune’s authorities also require buyers to put down a deposit of €5,000 for renovation works.

The town, which is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is within easy reach of the Adriatic coast, put last month 8 houses for sale at the symbolic price of 1 euro. The buyers will have to present a renovation project to the local authority within 6 months of purchasing the house, which will have to be completed within the next 3 years. The mayor explained that in case more than one person wants to buy a property, the one hiring local workers and using regional materials will be preferred.

If you are interested in buying a 1€ house, you can access the website of the Municipality of Sant’Elia a Pianisi, or you can go to 1eurohouses.com, which features properties across Italy. Among the people who have bought such houses over the years are British comedian Alan Carr and The Sopranos actor Lorraine Bracco, so you may never know who lives next door.
