Dyson Zone air-purifying headphones go on sale next year

Back in March, Dyson unveiled its first pair of noise-cancelling headphones featuring a wearable air purifier, called Dyson Zone. On Wednesday the company gave updates regarding the product’s characteristics pricing and availability.

Dyson Zone aims to combat noise and air pollution in urban areas around the world by giving wearers clean air, filtered of gases, allergens and particles – while cancelling out ambient noise and delivering audiophile-quality sound. “Air pollution is a global problem – it affects us everywhere we go. In our homes, at school, at work and as we travel, whether on foot, on a bike or by public or private transport. The Dyson Zone™ purifies the air you breathe on the move. And unlike face masks, it delivers a plume of fresh air without touching your face, using high-performance filters and two miniaturized air pumps. After six years in development, we’re excited to deliver pure air and pure audio, anywhere,” said Jake Dyson, Chief Engineer.

New data from World Health Organization shows that 9 out of 10 people breathe air containing high levels of pollutants. “There are also hundreds of millions of people at risk of hearing damage due to noise-induced hearing loss from both recreational and industrial noise,” stated WHO, cited by Spy.

Dyson’s device is capable of filtering out 99 percent of particle pollution as small as 0.1 microns, including dust, bacteria, and pollen. On the audio front, it features advanced noise canceling, containing 11 microphones, 8 from which are used to monitor surrounding noise 384,000 times a second, with up to 38 decibels of noise cancellation. It can be fully charged in 3 hours, and has a battery life up to 50 hours of listening time on a single charge, which is almost double than its competitors, or 4 hours when used in combination with its air purification system.

Zone noise-canceling and air-purifying headphones will first be available in China in January, and from March they will also be sold in the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK, and Ireland. The high-end product will go on sale for $949 in the US, respectively £749 in the UK, the company has confirmed. In the US, the device will be available in two colour variants: Ultra Blue/Prussian Blue and Prussian Blue/Bright Copper.
