Elon Musk unveiled his long awaited visionary tunnel that promises to fix traffic congestion in big cities
The tunnel was built by the Boring Company that Elon Musk runs. The plan is to lower modified electric cars into the tunnel network by lifts where they could travel at up to 150mph underground.
The launch that took place this Tuesday was also accompanied by a test run in a modified Tesla car able to work on the “loop”, the car reaching a speed of 49 mph.
“The profound breakthrough is very simple: it’s the ability to turn a normal car into a passively stable vehicle by adding the deployable tracking wheels, stabilising wheels, so that it can travel at high speed through a small tunnel,” he said on Tuesday.
The prototype tunnel is only a mile long and is situated beneath Hawthorne, where both Musk’s SpaceX and the Boring Company are located.
He also has in plan a technology to build the tunnels, something that is simultaneously digging the hole, moving the dirt out, and installing the reinforced concrete tunnel walls.
Although Mr. Musk wishes to have a completed network working by 2028. many specialists are skeptical saying that he must first unveil the technology that would allow cars to travel at such high-speed.
