Social media platforms to remove hate speech

Main social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft will delete hate speech on their platforms within 24 hours

The new measures will comply with a new European Union set of rules and regulations aiming to address both the refugee crisis and terrorism threats. The code of conduct was especially created to identify and remove radicalized young Muslims. As Reuters reports:

“As part of the pledge agreed with the European Commission, the web giants will review the majority of valid requests for removal of illegal hate speech in less than 24 hours and remove or disable access to the content if necessary. They will also strengthen their cooperation with civil society organisations who help flag hateful content when it goes online and promote “counter-narratives”, Reuters agency reports.

As European countries constantly put pressure on companies hosting social media platforms to remove all hate content in a very short period of time, Google, Facebook and Twitter will remove such posts in maximum 24 hours. Last year only, Twitter has suspended 125.000 accounts referring to ISIS and terrorist activities.
